Short answer: losing 2-5 extensions per day is completely normal — that is your natural lash cycle at work. Losing a large portion of your set within the first few days is NOT normal, and in most cases it points to an application problem, not something you did wrong.
What normal shedding looks like
You naturally shed a few lashes every day, and each extension rides on one natural lash. With around 80-140 extensions per eye, normal shedding means your set gradually thins over 2-3 weeks — which is exactly why fills every 2-3 weeks exist. At the 3-week mark, having roughly half your extensions left is standard.
5 causes of premature loss
- Application issues (the one nobody tells you about). If extensions fall out within 1-3 days — especially still attached to nothing, with no natural lash on them — the adhesive did not bond properly. Causes: wrong glue humidity, too little or too much adhesive, or dirty lashes at application time. This is a technician issue, and you should not pay for it twice.
- Oil-based products. Oils break down lash adhesive. Check your makeup remover, moisturizer and sunscreen — "oil-free" is the rule around your eyes.
- Getting them wet too soon. The adhesive needs 24-48 hours to fully cure. Steam, sweat and swimming in the first two days weaken the bond.
- Sleeping face-down. Rubbing against a pillow all night bends and dislodges extensions. Back-sleepers keep their sets longest; a silk pillowcase helps.
- Touching and rubbing. Every touch transfers oil and stresses the bond. Brush with a clean spoolie, but keep fingers off.
Our retention promise at Eybonee Spa
We prepare every application for maximum retention: lashes cleansed before application, adhesive matched to the day's humidity, and proper attachment on every single extension. Then we show you exactly how to care for your set — no secrets. If something ever seems off with your retention in the first days, tell us. We would rather check your set than have you quietly disappointed: that is how a small studio keeps clients for years, and it is a level of accountability that high-volume chains — where a different technician rushes through each appointment — simply cannot offer.
Make your set last longer
- Keep them dry for the first 24-48 hours.
- Wash them (yes, wash them!) every 2-3 days with an oil-free lash cleanser.
- Brush daily with a clean spoolie.
- Sleep on your back or side, never face-down.
- Book your fill every 1-3 weeks — priced by week from $40 (the sooner you come in, the less it costs), and your set always looks fresh.
FAQ
How many lash extensions fall out per day normally?
Losing 2-5 extensions a day is normal — your natural lashes shed daily and each extension is attached to one natural lash. A set gradually thins over 2-3 weeks, which is why fills exist.
Why did my lash extensions fall out after 3 days?
Significant loss within 1-3 days usually indicates an application problem — improper adhesive bonding, wrong humidity, or lashes not cleansed before application. If fallen extensions have no natural lash attached, the bond failed. A reputable studio will want to check your set.
Can I get my lash extensions wet?
After the first 24-48 hours, yes — you should actually wash them every 2-3 days with an oil-free cleanser. Just avoid water, steam and sweat during the initial curing period.
How often should I get a lash fill?
Every 2-3 weeks. If you wait longer and have less than about 40% of extensions left, you may need a new full set instead.
